SG:U Opinions (Love or Hate)

Postby abstractrobbie » Mon Oct 12, 2009 4:24 am

My opinion of the new show is I really love it. Great new direction, much darker and deeper than before, with still enough of the SG humor we all know and love. Still very early to judge many of the characters, as its only 3 episodes in, but so far really like the main characters, also glad to see that they have manged to find a way to keep the link to Earth going, as with the other two shows, my means of the Ancient communication stones too.
How things will play out over the coming episodes remains to be seen, but I can happily say that this has been a very satisfying experience for me so far.
I know there seem to be many people who, on the other hand, are very disapointed with the show, and have given various reasons as to why that is. After reading through many of them, all I can say is, I think they are wrong, and being very premature in their judgements.
People have complained that the characters are unlikeable, I think 3 episodes in is far too early to make such a judgement. They have said the lighting is poor and the camera work is jerky, I think the only lighting that they can really be refering to is on the ship itself, and to be honest, what kind of setting should a virtually derelict, flying death trap ship, exactly have ??? I think the dimmer lighting sets the mood perfectly, and as for the camera work, jerky is not exactly what I would call it, Jerky is some amatuer trying to film a wedding on his home video camera.
People have also complained that the show is very slow paced and boring, again, we are 3 episodes in, and they are telling the story of the characters at the moment, I think the pace is just fine as it is, and there is plenty of room for some fast paced action to follow as the series starts to unfold.
I think there are many people who simply want the show to fail, due to their anger at being deprived of their beloved SGA and SG1 shows, who have bad mouthed and put the new show down long before it was aired, and before any of us really knew anything about it. Now it is here, they will just not give it a chance, and spent the entire time watching it, looking for threads to pull on. The fact is that the old shows are gone and SGU is here, the others will only frequent the silver screen from now on, and I think that is something we should be happy about at the end of the day, better than then just being shelved for good. Life moves on, and so does TV, to have created a new SG show, exactly the same format as the last shows, in my view would have been a big failure, it needed a new direction, and it has got one, a very good one. Relax, calm down and try getting into it, you never know, you might actually start to enjoyit if you give it half a chance.

Hate the snivelling over emo no action Stargate Universe - reminds me of the Battlestar Galactica remake.
I've got nothing against the new signature nor a good introduction to get us acquainted with new characters and the plot of course... But jeyyyyzus it drags on and on and .... on...
Spoiler: Select all
And in the end 2/10 action for 8/10 people crying, arguing, yelling... Where's the escapism?
Believe me, after watching the first 3 episodes I ended up tired, depressed - and truly angry. Couldn't help thinking "what a waste of good material !!"

How little do I care watching 10 minutes of daddy's girl crying with mummy, then a whole episode people walking in the desert virtually no action but, oh wait, plenty of emo flash back about poor soldier boy's childhood.

All I see at this point is a bad tear jerker set on a space back drop.
Get some good writers on that show pretty please and give us a good plot, some action and... less tears.

And to the guy above, no mate, I can guarantee you I do not want that show to fail, far from it. And no, I do not expect to watch 3 episodes to get to see some action... Though yes, I agree the show needed a new direction.
But I feel it's a failure to completely alienate faithful viewers. If I want a sad show I'll go watch a sad sitcom - it's turning Stargate into one that makes me retch. In my humble opinion the show's writers are poor - or not suited to the genre.

It's a pure waste of good material.
Surely there are loads to imagine out of science fiction and make an action packed, sentimentally balanced, intelligently plotted series out of the genre - don't you think?

The first 2 episodes are ok- ish. Although could have been done better. I appreciate the longness as necessary to introduce the characters.
But the 3rd episode is rubbish. I'm so disappointed as a big stargate fan. It drags on and on with nothing exciting happens.
Spoiler: Select all
Like walking through the desert all tired and dehydrated. And then there's the commercial break. After commercial break, again walking through the desert bla2. I was like 'alright we got it you guys are tired and dehydrated and it's a big desert. We got the point!'

that is not the best exciting planet to be the first episode! It was a bad move. Viewers are not gonna get hooked onto something like that. We got desert here on earth. Come on it's nothing new. Plus the movie stargate already explored a desert planet, remember? With far more plots and exciting events!

It's a good thing stargate franchise already got sg1 and sg atlantis. If sgu is the first stargate series, we're off to a bad start.

I loved SG1 and SGA from the first episode but I'm afraid I can't say the same about SGU!

The concept is good but, so far, for me the characters suck...
I didn't see one person in the first two episodes that made me care what happened to them.

I have been hooked on Stargate since the original movie, so I just hope SGU gets better.
Jack: "Do we or do we not have a Zanex detector"?
Jack: "General, if it wasn't for SG1 you would be sitting there with a snake in your head instead of your head up your ass"!

Well so far I've quite enjoyed SGU. OK, so it can be a bit slow in places. But it's still finding is't feet! They've got some great actors, and a perilous situation with very little chance of escape. Honestly, who would have put money on Robert Carlyle joining the cast of a US sci-fi show!? Random, but good!

I'm looking forward to see what they can pull out of the bag in the next few weeks. Bring on some viscious crazy alien animals to threaten their safety!

Watching in anticipation...

Yes, aliens of course. Now we agree that it's off on a bad start. A good comeback would be to introduce an advanced race in that galaxy. Any chance that we call the race 'furlings'? Huh writers? Lol...(in case u are Reading this)...that would be so so awesome....

I don't know that what I kinda like about it, it's isn't all just a bottle show like the early SG1 episode, the plot is spread out and to me it works... it makes you stay around to find out what happens

Don't get me wrong, I love what they are trying to do. Create a show where one episode builds onto another. But they are NOT good at it. Even in shows like that, something happens per episode. Nothing has happened except for the scientist being a big douche and the fat kid liking the Senator's daughter and the Lt citing unnecessary Christian references.

I'm still giving this show a chance but I am being very critical. They are trying to imitate BSG but they simply do not have the writers to do it.
