Now, it's official there will be a third Stargate series and it will (most probably) premier sometime in early 2008!
The two Stargate executive producers Brad Wright and Robert C Cooper said about the upcoming series, "It's definitely in the works, it's something the studio is very actively pursuing. We have a concept that we've come up with. ... We've talked at length with the studio about what the concept is for it."
Rob C Cooper said that it could possibly be turn into a movie (if necessary), but a thrid series is more likely.
They said that it was to early to reveal the concept, but like Atlantis, it maintains the spirit of Stargate but at the same time opens up a whole new universe.
Wright said that, "Whatever the third series looks like, it will maintain the key ingredients that make Stargate what it is, the unique storytelling, it's humour and it's people from our time going on these adventures. It's not set in the future."
You know, an idea I haven't seen mentioned here is that perhaps it would bit a bit of a galactic historical team, traveling the universe, cataloging and writing down the history of the galaxy. I know that sort of reeks of Star Trek the first season, but that would have made sense with Daniel starring in it.
The third series will be called "Stargate Universe" as Robert C Cooper told Gateworld.
The new series has been conceived to be "a completely separate, third entity," Cooper said. It does currently exists in the form of a one-page treatment of the story and characters.
"Stargate Universe" was first conceived to be a stand-alone movie, that would function in Stargate's preestablished mythology but doesn't directly relate to SG-1 and Atlantis. Robert said that "a third series was a more realistic possibility at this point from the studio's standpoint", so they gave it a little more legs than it would have had as a one-off story to function as a series.
Universe will not be set in a different era, Cooper confirmed, neither as a prequel nor in the far future of the Stargate program.
"I'm not a big fan of prequels," he said. "I don't think that really works, and I don't really understand people who do think that works. One of the things that we love about Stargate is that is us - it's our military, it's our scientists, it's our people -- and we're going out into the galaxy and the universe to discover all the wonders that are out there, and dealing with our own limitations versus things that are far more advanced than us.
Cooper and executive producer Brad Wright plan to turn more attention to the new show's pilot script after wrapping principal photography on the two Stargate SG-1 movies, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum this June.
It has been revealed that the mysterious 9th chevron will play a major part in the new series
gateworld wrote:The working concept for the third Stargate television series includes the Stargate's ninth chevron, executive producer Robert C. Cooper told fans today. Cooper appeared on stage in front of 500 fans at Creation's Official Stargate SG-1 / Stargate Atlantis Convention in Vancouver, British Columbia.
"It plays a major factor in the third series," Cooper said in response to a fan's question about the significance of the ninth chevron. "So that question is answered!"
Fans have long wondered why the ninth and final chevron was created by the Ancients, since normal gate addresses only utilize seven of them. The eighth chevron adds an extra distance calculation, allowing the team to establish a stable wormhole to a Stargate in another galaxy. It was first used in SG-1 Season Two's "The Fifth Race."
Cooper also said that the third series "is very active in development. MGM is currently putting financing together. The goal is to have it out in the marketplace in early 2008, which means that we have to start writing very soon. The hold-up has really been the movies -- Brad and I are busy. When we are done with Continuum and Ark of Truth we're going to turn our attention to that pretty seriously."
Whatever form the series takes, viewers can definitely expect the same familiar from that has made the franchise a 10-year-old success. "There will be a Stargate, and a team on adventures," Cooper said. "I can tell you what it won't be, which is it really won't be as much of a spin-off of SG-1 as Atlantis was. And it won't be a spin-off of Atlantis. It's going to be a third arm of the franchise that will really stand alone and I think be an entirely new flavor from what we've done before."
Just what the Stargate's ninth chevron does and how it might relate to working title Stargate Universe (story) fans can only speculate. Watch GateWorld for more on the third series!
I've got a bad feeling about this... but i shall keep faith in the writers lol.
I've got my fingers crossed that it doesnt turn into some big Andromeda type sci-fi (which was ok... for Andromeda lol). I just get the feeling that over the last couple of years or so they just keep on making the Stargate universe bigger and bigger... and to be honest its pushing too far towards the scifi end of the spectrum. Stargate SG-1 was a unique twist on scifi/action/mythology... but that factor in the franchise seems to be diminishing, and the shows are far less original than they once were. I enjoyed all the Ori stuff on SG-1... still think it was just that stretch too far though, and it took away the shows charm somewhat.
On reflection i think SG-1 probably should have died when Atlantis came along... Dragging it on past the Goa'uld was a mistake me thinks (never thought i'd ever say that... cus i always want more Stargate lol).
nothing can replace the original stargate, but i will greet this new addition with open arms.
Daniel:" C'mon, t..tell 'em how deep you are!"
Daniel: " You'll be lucky if you understand this."
Teal'c: " My depth is immaterial to this conversation"
Daniel: " Ohhhh!!! You see!?!?"
Jack: " That's it, no more beer for you!"
This is true as long as Atlantis' ratings stay strong. Scifi is down as a network and for some reason that puts a new Stargate show in jeopardy. Atlantis is the #1 show on scifi and SG1 is like #3. What more does scifi channel want
- vern - sig pic was wayyy to big mate (size and filesize)... was slow loading on broadband lol. check the rules/faq out .
That's just great news!! So the Stargate franchise will live on for many years to come Can't wait for the first story details and to finally watch it in 2008/09 or 2009/10!
The biggest thing im looking forward to is seeing the diiferent races that will be in the show,im hoping it wont go along the lines of farscape to much and also i have this felling that it will have a firefly sort of felling about it,now firefly never had chance to devolpe there charcters properly but we have been told that universe will be very much a strong chracter relation between the team.so all i can say is im looking forward to this just hope it dosnt feel like another show already been realesed
